My boss gave me a few days off to relax before school started. However, not knowing just what to do with this free time, a fellow Winwood fan and I decided to see where Winwood would be playing in concert. We had recently attended the "Roll With It" concert @ Starwood in Nashville (home of Mrs. Winwood, by the way), and knew he was still on tour. Consulting a local ticket provider, we discovered that Winwood was playing at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania (800 miles away) on August 27 (just 2 days away). We had to leave immediately to make it on time, so giving everyone about 3 hours notice, we hit the road. When we arrived 14 hours later (don't ask how fast we drove), we had about 8 hours to kill before the concert started. We purchased our tickets and got in "line" (there was one person already there waiting). The stage was set up in the end zone of a football field, and general admission was the field itself. People were arriving early because, when the gates opened up, whoever got to the front of the field first had a front row seat. During our wait, some park personnel asked us where we got the Winwood concert t-shirts we were wearing. After hearing our story of seeing the same concert a few weeks before and of our 800 mile trek, they called a local radio station. The station mentioned us on air, and sent us 2 backstage passes. When the gates opened, my friend and I did the fastest 100-yard dashes of our lives, and claimed front-row center seats. Although the opening band sucked, Winwood was incredible. He sang for over two hours, doing material ranging from "Gimme Some Loving" and "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" up through the present album at the time. When the concert was over, I was exhausted from the lack of sleep from the drive and the 2+ hours of excitement, but I was not about to waste our passes backstage. However, the Master had given an amazing concert and was very tired. We briefly talked with some roadies and drank a couple of free Michelobs (I still have the empty bottles to this day), but did not get a chance to see Steve. We left feeling disappointed, yet still very ecstatic from the excellence of the concert. As we were leaving, we noticed the range of Winwood's appeal. My friend and I were 20 and 19 years old, respectively, but there were fans there that ranged from older than our parents to as young as 12 & 13. Very rarely does someone come along and consistently produce great music spanning three decades. And if he continues at his present pace, the grandchildren of sixty's generation will appreciate Winwood as much as their grandparents. P. S. Celine Dion is awesome, too. 3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3 From: RBERG51@aol.com Sent: Saturday, March 09, 1996 11:07 AM Subject: Winwood/page session question I recently obtained a tape of eight takes of Winwood and Jimmy Page working out a song. Just guitar and organ. This has been describe by some as the "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" sessions. Do you have any info? Others say that it's not Steve Winwood on organ, but Jones, the Zeppelin bass player. Question: does anybody knows what is the sax FX that Chris Wood is using in the "Live at Santa Monica" video? I saw it on an Italian Music TV... I think it was a wonderful performance. I am dubious about "cuts": I think that the concert was transmitted "cut": it's very short! The piece list was: The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, John Barleycorn, Glad/Freedom Rider, Dear Mr. Fantasy ... too short, isn't it? Anybody knows the *full* list? 8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8 Date: Tue, 12 Mar 96 13:27:13 EST From: Adrian Subject: U.S. vs. British versions of Mr. Fantasy A while back one list member wrote in about his disappointment that the CD version of Mr. Fantasy is the original British version rather than the U.S. version. Growing up in Canada, I got used to the Canadian version entitled "Traffic Reaping" which was the same as the U.S. Mr. Fantasy minus two songs. Eventually, "Traffic Reaping" was deleted and replaced with Canadian pressings of the British version of Mr. Fantasy and I remember being disappointed with thearrangement and choice of songs on the British version. I think its all a question of what you're used to. I experienced the same sensation when I first listened to the CD version of the Beatles' Rubber Soul. I can't imagine the album without I've Just Seen A Face. That song seems to fitperfectly into the sound of Rubber Soul. But it was recorded by the Beatles as a filler track for the Help soundtrack. Go figure... Adrian Vockeroth 9*9*9*9*9*9*9*9*9*9*9*9*9 Date: Tue, 12 Mar 96 13:38:34 EST From: Adrian Subject: Ginger Baker's Airforce I just received the second issue of "Chronicles" and recommend it to all list members. The second issue mentions Ginger Baker's Airforce whose first album I have been listening to this week. I'd be curious to know what other list members think of that album. I remember being extremely disappointed with it when it first came out. I guess I had thought of Airforce as being Blind Faith augmented with horns and with Clapton replaced by Denny Laine. Instead it was really Ginger Baker going back to his days as a member of the Graham Bond Organization and doing his jazz thing. The fact that Airforce had three Traffic members is of little consequence because asfar as I'm concerned, Winwood, Wood and Grech could have been replaced by other musicians without changing the flavour of the album. I've never heard the second Airforce album and have no idea what the group's lineup was for that album. Can anyone provide me with details of the album. Is it live or studio? Who plays on it? Is it any good? The first is that the symbol is an expression of movement in many directions converging together, like the movement of automotive traffic on a freeway, ergo the name of a band that wanted to keep things moving. I hear that Jim Capaldi is responsible for drawing the symbol. The second interpretation, (strictly my own) came with an experimentation I did (probably stoned) many years ago. I placed a mirror perpendicular to the symbol on one of my Traffic albums. The reflected image transformed the Traffic symbol into a furry face creature who I could have sworn was Mr. Fantasy. This could have only happened in the 60s. Also, I am really looking forward to the new Spencer Davis Group CD. There were so many wonderful Spencer Davis tunes that aren't currently available on CD. I love the ballads: "It Hurts Me So", "Ill Just Drown In My Own Tears" and "Georgia" and the infectious rocker "Cant Get Enough of It. " I hope you all get to hear these tunes someday soon. One of the reasons the Far From Home album was such a pleasure was to hear Steve play his well sculpted guitar solos again. I was listening to Talking Back to the Night and Arc of a Diver albums driving around in the car this weekend. Talking Back has barely a trace of guitar and Arc of A Diver has some good guitar on Night Train and mandolin on Slowdown, Sundown. It seems like every album since then has featured 1 guitar oriented track. The Far From Home album, and especially last year's Traffic tour, contained tons of wonderful guitar solos. Finally, on the official Dave Mason home page (run by Dave himself, I understand) is the claim that Feeling Alright has been covered 300 times. For the curious, there is a schedule of Dave's 1996 tour dates available on this page. Id go see him if he played You Can All Join In, Vagabond Virgin, Just For You, Utterly Simple and Paper Sun. Come on Dave, get that old sitar out of the closet!! Alan 12*12*12*12*12*12*12*12*12 Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 14:30:40 -0600 From: Andrea Dyche Subject: "Arc Of A Diver" cover Hi! I just joined the mailing list. I've been listening to Steve for a few years now. I just bought a copy of "Arc Of A Diver" on CD used to replace my old, worn out tape. I was in a record store out at the mall the other day and noticed that the "Arc Of A Diver" album cover was different than the one that I have. The lettering on the front was bigger than the one that I have and on the back I have a picture of Steve, the one at the mall didn't. Can someone explain this to me?
