E-Online on Junction Seven |

| Needing a shot in the arm, Winwood's career gets no boost from Junction 7, a well-crafted but ultimately hollow collection of limp R&B/pop. Co-produced by Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin), the album seems mostly a product of his manicured, '80s dance-pop sound, particularly the energetic "Just Wanna Have Some Fun," easily the best track here. With its salsa horns and percussion, "Gotta Get Back to My Baby" exudes some spunk, but a Nile Rodgers-aided cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair" is all wrong, trading in the original's sleaze and menace for a bland, open groove. Most of the rest are forgettable, Quiet Storm-type tunes--pleasant enough, but nothing to put Winwood or his fans back in the high life again. |
